Major in Art History

My mother is French, and so even though I was born in California and lived with my family聽in Virginia, I鈥檇 always considered France my second home,聽and frequently visited聽my grandparents and cousins in聽Vend茅e, on the western coast of France.聽When I turned 16, I left for Paris, and never looked back.聽I spent my gap year auditioning聽for different ballet companies聽but聽after 17 years of dance,聽I was starting to realize聽that this wasn鈥檛 the career I wanted for the rest of my life. I did some research, found out聽about AUP,聽applied and was聽(thankfully)聽accepted!聽

I wanted to major in Psychology聽until I fell deeply in love with Art History after a聽Firstbridge聽class and decided to聽dig聽deeper.聽I couldn鈥檛 be happier with my聽choice, since聽the Art History department here is absolutely wonderful.聽All of the professors display聽an immense passion and drive for what they teach聽and take the time to make sure that you鈥檙e just as motivated as they are. They also聽encourage questions so that you never feel uncomfortable or foolish when you ask.聽聽

The small class sizes are a major advantage聽to聽being at AUP, since you鈥檙e really able to develop close聽relationships聽with your professors.聽I鈥檝e聽also聽loved聽all of the聽trips we鈥檝e taken to museums like the Louvre and the聽Mus茅e聽d鈥橭rsay, since there鈥檚 nothing聽like聽getting up close and personal with a piece that you鈥檝e been reading about.聽My聽current聽favorite class聽is on Versailles: we visit the palace on an almost weekly basis, while listening to Professor Gabriel Wick鈥檚 seamless dissection of its history.聽聽

At AUP,聽I鈥檝e really begun to discover what I like and聽am learning to keep an open mind about聽what I don鈥檛 like,聽a task that鈥檚 made easier by聽professors who聽make what they鈥檙e teaching as interesting as possible.

I still do ballet outside of AUP聽and this past summer, took part in聽an internship at a gallery near the聽Mus茅e聽d鈥橭rsay,聽where聽I worked with a very small team鈥攖hree people, including me鈥攚ho taught me everything聽I needed to know聽about聽running a gallery. I鈥檝e been聽asked to come back next summer,聽for which I鈥檓 extremely聽grateful聽since the whole experience was fantastic.聽聽聽

AUP has helped聽expand聽my love of art, which聽began聽when聽I聽was taken to聽museums every day聽as a child, an experience聽I enjoyed,聽even though I never truly understood what I was looking at. At AUP,聽I鈥檝e really begun to discover what I like and聽am learning to keep an open mind about聽what I don鈥檛 like,聽a task that鈥檚 made easier by聽professors who聽make what they鈥檙e teaching as interesting as possible.聽聽

Thanks to all that I鈥檝e learned both in and out聽of the classroom, I know聽that I want my future career to be within the art world, perhaps as聽a buyer of paintings, or working聽in an auction house or聽gallery. I will聽never move back to America鈥擯aris and France have my heart.聽聽
