The residency requirement for incoming students is set in an effort to ensure students鈥 wellbeing and successful transition in Paris and at AUP, and to afford them a sense of community through living with their peers. We either list AUP-run residences, where we have resident advisors working for us on-site, or partner residences with whom we have a collaborative working relationship. This is to ensure that we are able to support our students to the best of our ability during their first year in Paris - an important transitional year, especially for those who are living abroad and/or leaving home for the first time.
Incoming first-year undergraduate students, visiting and degree-seeking, are required to secure housing through AUP. Students wishing to apply for a housing exemption must select that housing option in their AUP status page and must qualify based on the criteria listed in the Housing Exemption Policy listed below. No exemptions will be made after the start of the semester鈥攕tudents assigned to AUP housing are committing to their reservation for the full academic year (or for the full semester if they are only attending AUP for one semester).
Transfer students have the opportunity to arrange housing through AUP to facilitate their transition to the university and their new journey in Paris 鈥 they will be able submit their housing registration form after the first round of assignments reserved to incoming first-year students.聽Those who opt-out of AUP housing will be expected to secure housing on their own.
Coop and independent visiting students聽who have already had a college experience are not required to secure housing through AUP unless their home institution mandates it.聽They will be able to submit their housing registration form after the first round of assignment reserved to incoming first-year students.
Important Note for Incoming Students for Spring Semester 2025: Students who secure AUP Housing for Spring 2025 have their housing assignment for the Spring 2025 semester only: their housing assignment does not extend for Fall 2025. Should a student decide to return for Fall 2025, they would be considered a returning student and, as such, are not eligible to live in an AUP Residence. Returning students can avail of other resources, however, such as the AUP Housing Database.
Students may request an exemption from the first-year housing requirement based on specific criteria; the exemption policy has been designed to accommodate students who have specific needs not met by the AUP Housing offering or can demonstrate that they have the resources and support needed to find safe accommodation and transition through their first year in Paris and at AUP independently.
Exemptions must be justified by the appropriate documentation. Approved reasons for receiving a housing exemption are as follows:
PLEASE NOTE:
You will first need to choose an exemption when selecting your housing options on your AUP Status Page, at which point the exemption form will be made available to you on your status page. You will be able to submit that request and attach all necessary documentation; the housing office will process your request within two to three business days of your submission.
We process exemption requests on a rolling basis, as students continue confirming their attendance to the university. Please note, however, that students must select the exemption option and submit their request in lieu of booking AUP Housing. Once students have elected to secure AUP Housing and submitted their preferences, they can no longer change their selection to submit an exemption.
No, the housing office does not grant mid-year exemptions. In securing housing for our incoming students, we make year-long commitments for accommodation to ensure that they are safely housed throughout their first year at AUP. As such, students who commit to AUP housing for Fall聽and are planning to attend AUP for the full academic year are securing an accommodation with the university for the full year.
Students who secure AUP Housing for Spring have their housing assignment for the Spring semester only: their housing assignment does not extend for Fall. Should a student decide to return for Fall, they would be considered a returning student, and, as such, are not eligible to live in an AUP Residence. Returning students can avail of other resources, however, such as the AUP Housing Database.
